Carouge is nicknamed the Sardinian City during the Treaty of Turin in 1754, where the territory is ceded to the Kingdom of Sardinia by the Republic of Geneva. Under the will of King Victor-Amédée III of Sardinia, the hamlet is erected as a town by Piedmontese architects who give it its character. In 1786 the king grants it the title of Royal City. The commune is reunited in Geneva since the Treaty of Turin of 1816.
